No longer working for Eee on Solaris 11 Express

You know Oracle focus 'Solaris 11' on Servers,I finally received from bugmail-sender as follows,they say 'No Resource Available':

I would move Oi if I continue to use 'OpenSolaris' :( Of course Eee 901 is now too old to use Solaris 11 Express.And more Solaris 11 no longer support 32bit kernel,I must move 64bit-based PCs to use Solaris 11.So I now thinking of buying new one...Now filing to use that because It is my own risk to use Solaris 11 on any laptops.I now looking for laptops running Solaris 11 for a long while..I havent found yet because there are some limits to use laptops without Windows or modify laptops.that is,

1.Some BIOS(EFI) wont boot and work any OSes except Windows on the laptop (like my Alienware)
2.Equipments on laptops update frequently,we sometimes find same PCs using another equipments because a lot production for some laptops is different from another.
3.Some laptops cant modify because of some reasons
- the limit of electric power they have
- BIOS(EFI) enforce users not to modify
- Equipments are very much hard to removed and re-attached because of the layouts in the laptop M/B.
4.It is very hard to find laptops using equipments running with old driver solaris 11 has,that is,there are some Realtek NIC or Wifi driver in Solaris 11 but I am sure Oracle no longer support for it,forus on Intel and Broadcom server NIC card using Solaris 11 as a 'server OS'.
5.AND MORE it is very hard to find PCs working Solaris 11.We sometimes find some of Oracle employees using Mac,Lenovo,Dell on Solaris 11 though,they wont? disclose the info..

And lately I now checking low-costed laptops and osol-discuss,

1.Solaris 11 Ex works on Intel Sandy-Bridge laptops.
2.Some low-cost PC using old drivers (realek 81xxE NICs are used on Acer,Asus)
3.AMD Fusions seem to use realtek old-compatible equipments.

I think AMD llano-based ASUS K53TA is better but too bigger :(on the other,I havent found better Intel Sandy-Bridge-based laptops.....

Anyway I am much annoyed...

Smart OS - illumos based server OS has been released!

Joyent,you know a famous cloud company concerning illumos project,has
released illmos based os named 'smartos'.am happy to receive the letter
KVM on illumos,I just thinking of porting VMware to Some other OS
running Hypervisor.

I will try later (at least till this weekend!,I have checked my ESXi in my office but it needs physical environments and vt on CPUs..didnt work as a VM on it)

You know I getting started OpenSolaris on first netbook Eee 701,is now too old - celeron 900MHz (is clock-down to 600MHz by BIOS),2GB MEM,4GB SSD.it used to be about 500US$ at that time.former Sun Japan Engineer asked me to use OpenSolaris and Solaris 10 on it,and Robert and Tim helped me.

Now Sun going to Oracle,Oracle no longer use 'OpenSolaris' and changed the name 'Solaris 11 Express' and annouced no longer use 32bit kernel on it.I had to suspend my project OpenSolaris on Eee.now OpenIndiana,forked by illumos project we can use,and there are going to release official release build 151,I would tring on latest Oi,build 151.

I much wondering Eee 701 works great on Oi b151.it is very slow working (often firefox freezed a bit) though,It is great suspend-resume works on Eee 701!

Eee is still useful if you use it for checking mail and checking some website at a glance!

Havent tried any Oi or Solaris 11 Express on my Eee because you know Oracle no longer support 32bit kernel next release (Solaris 11,will be probably released in the OOW week ).by chance I saw the tweet,someone tring Oi151,so I would try Oi151.Checking openindiana.org website.I could find Oi151broken?release in http://dlc-int.openindiana.org/151/.

Downloaded and tried..but gui-install doesnt work,selecting the TZ,it suddenly stopped.I just have to check the gui-install file (sorry I have no time to check but perhaps Oi development groups know this issue other pc also doesnt work that ).checked install_log,there were no errors.I guess something installer setting file.but shutdown went better than Solaris 11 Express (11 Express doesnt work shutdown sequence on my eees so I cant power off with it ).

well I hope the Oi official release will be fixed the problem.

*on the other hand I tried Oi text beta 151 on my eee,worked almost good.feel safe.

In the video I have heard the info when Oracle Solaris 11 Express relesed..said "very soon","any day now","within a week"....

I haven't checked the presos in detail (because it is 16 hours difference between San Jone and Tokyo ..felt taking off at that time,..but I now extremely busy..)..I should check sooner..

Checking at a glance Oracle Solaris 11 is focused on Servers...for SPARC doesn't support GUI install - supports CUI and AI installer (same as OpenSolaris and checked Ultra 27 workstations on Oracle website,the link has been broken..).I discussed on the Ustream field to ask some questions to the speakers.heard Oracle Solaris is based on b151a or later? (Checking Dave Miner's session you can see the demo running b151a..well perhaps based on b151a or b151b?)

Anyway,looking forward to see New Oracle/Sun Solaris sooner within a week!

Some of you know I went to Oracle OpenWorld (says OOW) and JavaOne + Oracle Develop at Moscone Center in San Francisco.I was much impressed and huge more changed than CommunityOne West and JavaOne last year.for more detail I would blog my personal blog masafumiohta.wordpress.com because Almost happened doesnt concerned my eee or netbook project.much appreciate if could access my personal blog you would know what happened.

Let you know the two issues:

First,please check the pics:at the ZFS hands-on at OOW.it run on virtualbox.you know latest is b147.I wondered why oracle would use old release -thought b145 was stable edi?well or..

Second,Someone asked Dan Robart laptop on Solaris 11.Dan said use virtualbox - it was friendly for laptops and there were driver problems - several driver on laptops.well it was dissapointed Oracle would focus on only servers for Solaris 11 - no longer continue developing for laptops.Indeed,Virtualbox is friendly and useful for desktop.but we would use Solaris 11 directly on our laptops.hope someone like Murayma-san would contiune developing drivers for Solaris 11.

So,What should we next?
1.Forus on OpenIndiana (illumos) I have no time to build illumos I hope to run well on my eee or Notebook.
2.Ask Murayama-san about ethernet driver on your netbook (hope illumos would include his drivers)
3.Use Intel driver now intel making Intel's device driver for (Open)Solaris.guess they would continue drivers for Solaris 11.(You might try Intel wifi miniPCI adaptors if your gov doesn't prohibit because of the radio law.)

Anyway we should move on and look deeply OpenIndiana and illumos - wish Oracle would sue Nexenta with their Solaris License...

Updated my distro for b134 and ask for helping to develop L1C driver for Eees.

I have been extremely busy lately because I am joining the biggest project in my company.I have to use VMWare these days to evaluate our solutions for my customer..

btw I am always thinking of spreading my idea for OpenSolaris on Eee,you know I now having code.google.com to upload some files so that every OSUGers would reuse them.but some of them think diffultly I needs something skills (C,XML).so I am thinking of sharing my 'environment' using template files of Virtual Machines.you can experience making your distro so easily and correct and customize your distro very vety easily.so Lately looking into VM solutions especially bare-metal-based virtualization solution like VMware ESXi and,you know,Oracle VM.and I tried to use Laptops and Netbook because they have low comsumption watts (6-25W) and more I bought many to evaluate OpenSolaris.I had a plan to reuse.and more I would power on the systems all the day.they are for 'the server' use.

ESXi is great to use as a bare-metal virtualization system.it works great on my N10J and KOUZIRO Core2duo-based laptop.but cant shutdown normally get panic.and more in N10J panic breaks the ESXi - so ESXi never boots after getting panic.very bad.workaround is reseting the system for shutdowning and killing off just before powering on and rebooting the systems in 'reseting the system' process.

I had a time to present Tokyo Linux User Meeting last week.I would appreciate if you could check my preso - running OpenSolaris VM Client on my Alienware Laptop.

On the other hand,Oracle VM works good and it is good using PVM on it- it runs more faster than VM on VMware.but it might need high-performance CPU like Core i7.when I use it on my netbook it works good but reboots again and again because of higher loading.I have now no time to check in detail so I wondering why..

I also have to check CDDL to deliver my VM so that you could reuse.Anyway I would love to do someone would go on joining and helping my OpenSolaris project easily because I now very very very busy for my business..

Call for drivers on your Eees don't work on OpenSolaris

latest Eees are very changed and very often changed you know NIC,wifi,Graphics,Camera and 'more and more!'- I have blogged about that and that makes much annoyed for me.I cant have enough money to buy all the Eee for improving...

Lately I received from some guys about L1C driver on latest Eee.It doesn't work on OpenSolaris -atge driver doesn't support it.I told Murayama-san about that he said he had no time to develop..very very busy now.

So What we should do? all we can do ask for Sun's guy through 'defects.opensolaris.org' it is for the bugs in OpenSolaris but we can request to them what drivers we need for using OpenSolaris on our Eee.

Sorry I have no latest Eees so I should ask you to give me some infos for 'defects'.
if you find the drivers don't work on your Eee on OpenSolaris,please mail me about the drivers and the info in detail (logs,prtconf -v,and more).

I very very much appreciate if you could help me and my project 'OpenSolaris on Eee'

Finally OpenSolaris supports G105M graphics for N10J.Nvidia updated the driver - 190.53 and Sun requested including driver_aliases for N10J.

please check check it out on your N10J (or your notebook having G105M).

I checked my b132-WC on my Eee 701(4G-X),a bit problem while booting but works good.

And noted 'latest' nightly had troubles while building caiman -haven't built at all.it will be fixed till next release..so I used old nightly for building.

Sorry long time to no blog...I am very very extremely busy right now.but I checking updated dev latest and building for eeepcs.but there are much various eees (you know new Atom already released I haven't checked..)I would check all of eees but I have no time to check and more I have not so enough money to buy them :(

So I always call for testers my distro and much appreciate you could send the report using it - something issues or so on.

I now focusing on eee 701 (eeepc 4g-x).it is my first eee and it has many users in developing countries.the users take care of using it to study OpenSolaris and Java.I continuing adding zfs options - compression=on,atime=off and dedup=on because they make disk saved using - it takes 2.3gb to install.(actually it seems the distro using 1.7GB,see the pics below).only difference from official dev is atge driver from murayama-san and patches while shutdown,perhaps it can install another netbooks like Acer,MSI,TOSHIBA and more because almost packages are included same as official one.

And I am thinking of having repo for my distro...but it needs network speed user would download from it..that makes much annoyed..if you have any good idea for it,much appreciate your telling it.

Installing Nvidia G105M Driver on OpenSolaris

I find the latest 190.42 is supported on G105M,so I tried to install that
Of course you can use it as 'vgatext' driver but there are some problems using it.
So I tried to install that

First of all, downloading Nvidia Driver,

Confirming Licence Agreement you can download the latest 190.42 driver for Solaris.it is an installer though but you cant install normally because NVDAgraphics cant uninstall on b126.so you should install with "-x" option so type,

$NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-190.42.run -x

to unpack into SVR4 packages.
then you can see them in under the directory 'NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-190.42'.

$ls
NVDAgraphics NVDAgraphicsr gfx_private install

checking the install script,you should install 2 packages with pkgadd.
and install gfx_private with cp as follows,or edit 'install' script to delete the column '# Check if OpenSolaris NVDAgraphics IPS package is already installed'

$pfexec pkgadd -d .

I tried to use Secondlife viewer for checking.it went good,but some problem..And almost shortcut keys don't work.

its viewer version is 1.20. I would love to build the latest if you have some informations about building please let me know.

How to do 'triple boot' - OpenSolaris,Ubuntu 9.10,Windows XP

Sorry I cant blog lately I was extremely busy right now,and more my Eee 901 is wrong and I now waiting for its being fixed..

For the time being I have to use my new Eee...uups,similar Eee named 'N10J'.it has Nvidia G105M Graphics,different from any other Eees.(I've heard ION-based netbook Eee now being sold only in China?)It works great and has 2 year world-wide warranties - very good.

But its Nvidia works not much better than Intel 945GM (it has switch G105M←→945GM for electric power saving).I realized again intel works great for OpenSolaris :) I hope Nvidia would produce the driver for OpenSolaris.

Btw I sometimes use Secondlife - I love its 'Virtual World'.and love meeting people all over the world there:) I tried it on Windows but it worked very bad on my N10J espeially its sounds.so I tried on Ubuntu it worked very good except it cant shutdown(I had to 'kill -9' the process for it).I haven't tried it on OpenSolaris because I haven't found latest one.I have to build it for OpenSolaris users ;))

So I tried to set 'triple-boot-system' .it has two problems doing that -we can't choose any directories for the 'OpenSolaris' grub and Ubuntu 9.10 has new grub -Grub 2.so I had to use OpenSolaris grub and add the lines for connecting Ubuntu Gru b 2,that is,first I installed OpenSolaris second installed Ubuntu (I installed its grub same directory as Ubuntu) and I added as follows:

I had checked my Eee 901 and Eee 701 - both work good :)

you know L1E atge driver has been supported on this release,but it doesn't work on L2 NIC :( Murayama-san's driver has been supported both NICs so I had to replace driver for L2 NIC.

I told you eeepc-discuss atge driver will be supported on b123 by Sun (thanks contributing Murayama-san),so almost Eee drivers will be supported.I will have to consider the direction of my distro - I should add some useful applications for netbooks and so on.

This build is included arn,rwn(fixed bug) and usbser so I've added atge NIC by murayama-san ,usbsacm hot-plug chototsu-san.(I tried to hotplug my Huawei but it doesn't work good on my Eee)

Note it is my trial release so I am not responsible for it your using at all.

Hi,

You know netbook markets getting HOT lately ASUS have been rushing releasing too much Eees ;(
I cant have a time to check and more I don't have a way to rent all of them to check my distro..
(If I were too rich I would buy all for checking;( )

I much scared OpenSolaris wouldn't work some of Eees (perhaps using Z530 Atoms Eees).
So I very much appreciate if you could help - doesn't work or works good.

And I would love to gather the informations about equipments all Eees have especially wifi and wired.
I went to Yodobashi-Camera - which is one of the famous big stores in Japan - to check them.
I found there are several equipments Eees have I felt like checking but you know their cherks don't permit,I bet;(
And you don't know there are too much differences between Eee 900 for Japanese and Eee 900 for European - camera or something.

So I would call for helpers to tell me how your Eee works on OpenSolaris and what equipments your Eee has.
if you are my help,please let me know. feel free to mail me or give some comments to my blog.

Replacing internal SSD

I tried to replace internal SSD - 8GB with 64GB.

I bought at Akihabara shop.it is about 9,980 yen,well,it was cheap for me.
Replacing was very easy to do,see the pics.

Opening rear panel,you can see old SSD which is on miniPCIe slot,it is very easy to remove old one and place new one.

I wanted to replace because 8GB was small for using especially making LiveUSB:(

Sorry it's been very very long time no blog.
I just getting started again my blog.
Some of you know Chonan-san released 'OpenSolaris LiveUSB Creator' for Windows.

it make OpenSolaris-LiveUSB ease on Windows,you should note it needs .NET 2.0 or later frameworks,you should install it using Windows LiveUpdate.
(he is also introduced genunix.org)

I tried to use it for my cutomized OpenSolaris LiveUSB for Eee PC.It went fine.
I took some snapshot to show you.

*setting for making LiveUSB:you should set where .usb file is and the usb sticks you would use for it.

*running OpenSolaris LiveUSB Creator it took not so long time to make.

*finishing installation

I tried to use my LiveUSB made by the OpenSolaris USB Creator I went good.

I hope more and more people try OpenSolaris using this Creator as a 'beginner'.

Brief Report;OpenSolaris on Vaio P

Taki-san tried to install OpenSolaris 2009.6 snv106 on his friend's Vaio P,you know the most famous "small" PC lately,It's finally worked out but have some problems for working.let's have a look:)

There was the workaround for ACPI,he used that for booting OpenSolaris on it.
(Thanks Haraguchi-san and Sato-san for helping him)

Checking Device Manager NIC,Wifi didn't seem to work out but he said we might use Murayama-san's myk driver and ath driver in OpenSolaris.org...but he said we didn't have some ideas for working "COM" on it..

He said we didn't have any good resolutions on OpenSolaris,that is,Vaio P has 1600x768 resolution,but we have no choice but to use 1024x768 resolution on it.there would be some workarounds though we have'nt some ideas yet.(but it is not so diffcult problem..)

Compiz didn't work out of the box...it's pity..

Guys who are interested and try on it,he filed some datas as follows

Checking datas,you can find Atom didn't work as dual-core...he said it was the most serious problem for us:-(

He kindly made LiveUSB for Vaio P (adding ACPI workaround) for us,

You can use "usbcopy" command to it for making,

env LC_ALL=C usbcopy osol-0906-106a-x86_with_acpi_workaround.usb

And You should choose "APCI Workaround" in the grub mode.

Have you checked snv106 -latest OpenSolaris release? its LiveCD(LiveUSB) is now supported atheros drivers for Intel Celeron-based Eees like Eee 701 and 900.so you can check OpenSolaris easily!

And you can check snv106 LiveUSB working on my Eee 701;

Hope more and more Eee users would try it with its LiveCD or LiveUSB:-)

Today we have heard repository-update to b106,perhaps it will be fixed about 945GME driver - you can use GUI installer on your Atom-based Eees without anything settings.
but if you would still like to use OpenSolaris 2008.11 Offical release,you might try to use this bootable usb-image for installation to your Atom-based Eees.

Trying to install OpenSolaris to SDHC Card for Eee PC

I've heard from Andy-san in eeepc-discuss we can install OpenSolaris to something Removable media like USB sticks and SHDCs.I had thought something hardware problem in SDHC or USB sticks...because I had met installer stopped and then the installation failed serveral times when I had installed Neveda to SHDC in my Eees.so I tried to install to my Transcend 8GB class 6 SDHC card that I used to install OpenSolaris 2008.5 for my Eee 701.

according to the link,we might have to prepare another removable media for reinstalling grub stages -stage1 and stage2?(I had prepared an USB stick for the reinstallation.I downloaded to my USB stick).I tried to do that as follows;

1.Installed OpenSolaris to SDHC

2.After installation I didn't REBOOT THE SYSTEM before reintalling grub stages.

3.Connected my USB memory in which I had prepared the grub stage files for the reinstallation, and unziped and untared to /tmp.

cd /tmp
cp /media/NO_NAME/grub_zfs_devid.tar.gz *
gzip -d grub_zfs_devid.tar.gz | tar -xf -
(will create two files: stage1 and stage2)

4.checked newly pools in my SDHC,so typed

zpool status

that showed newly pools status as follows;

pool: rpool
state: ONLINE
scrub: none requested
config:

NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
rpool ONLINE 0 0 0
c4t0d0s0 ONLINE 0 0 0

perhaps you can see the same if you try it.I needed to know the SDHC device name that I installed OpenSolaris for the reinstallation.

5.ReInstalled grub stages to my SDHC,so typed,

installgrub /tmp/stage1 /tmp/stage2 /dev/rdsk/c4t0d0s0

6.Reboot the system pushing the button "reboot"

7.Edited the grub and deleted "findroot (pool_rpool,0,a)" that is in the first line.because I installed OpenSolaris to my SSD in my Eees,that is,It made to boot the system from my SSD. I guess the first It can check the internal disk to find the "root".

I sometimes use OpenSolaris on this Transcend SDHC,it works well but sometimes meet I/O problems -get write or read I/O error..I guess SDHC doesn't have enough write/read speeds compared with SSD(I have talked about disk "speeds" with Sun's employee)

Many of you would like to use Windows on your Eee - something netbooks as usual.so it make you had a chance to try OpenSolaris on your Eees or netbooks.Hope you try!

2 weeks ago I post the blog that new Raink driver(rwn) for Eee PC has released,but it has to be fixed..

I had tried to use it again and again through the weekend at that time with Felix Peng of Sun ERI.hmm...As a result it didn't work correctly;it coundn't get stronger signals than the ones when I used Windows or couldn't get any signals then I could't find any wifi APs.and more it sometimes couldn't get any connection when the APs use WEP connection(perhaps something wrong are there in it.).and had something wrong in in.ndpd so I had to stop using IPv6 setting "rwm noipv6" in /etc/nwam/llp.

Anyway I succeeded in using that but sometimes it got panic and crashed -it dump cores.

I mailed about it to Felix Peng like chatting:-) he said it would have to be fixed as using "pci1814,781" in /etc/driver_aliases because he made it in his desktop whose id is "pci1816,781" and he said it would have to be fixed for IPv6 because of the "in.ndpd" failture.

I hope It will be fixed so soon.Thanks Felix for great works and help:-)

P.S. he prepared two binaries because you know "Crossbow" is supported by snv b105 later,that is,bin version is for its non-supported,pkg version is for its supported.so you must be careful to try it.

Hi,

Robs said New Ralink drivers(rwm drivers) for Atomed-based Eee have released.I tried to use them my Eee 901s(one is OpenSolaris 2008.11 snv 101b,another is Solaris Nevada snv b105).but they didn't work and crashed:(

on OpenSolaris rwn driver for it seemed working,but mostly it couldn't find wifi access points:( and Although it could find them,it couldn't get DHCP informations - IP Address and something that were needed for connection to internet and more I wondered why it couldn't get strong signals from myhome wifi access point...(attached the pics - figure 1) So it couldn't connect...I checked network port setting I saw it worked for receiving but didn't work for sending....hmmmm....and I found only just after the installation it could find some wifi access points but rebooting the system after the installation it could'nt find them at all(attached the pics - figure 2).

(figure 1:it could get connection to myhome wifi AP but could'nt get strong singnals and DHCP informations)

(figure 2;it couldn't get any connection and there weren't no AP lists on my Eee)

On Solaris Nevada it was too bad - it crashed and caused panic:(

I filed something log files - /var/adm/messages and crash dumps files and sent it to Felix who manages these rwn drivers.He sent the rwn binary to eeepc-discuss and I tried to use it on my OpenSolaris but it crashed and caused panic same as the case of Nevada:(

Anyway I hope it will be fixed soon and I bet it will be done soon because the rwn binary driver in opensolaris.org worked "a bit" on my Eees:)

At first it couldn't work it said to need some gstreamer plugins to work,so I tried to use google to search some addon for Songbird,I found the links;

Replacing internal wifi on your Eee (but please be careful!)

Hi,

I have known Intel interal wifi works on OpenSolaris checking menno-san's blog.so I mailed him to ask about the intel wifi.he told me intel 3945ABG can work on OpenSolaris easily.I tried to replace it for using wifi.but please be careful!Almost countries cannot permit replacing internal wifi with their Radio Law,because they accept using it with its netbook,that is,they accept its netbook not accept internal miniPCIe wifi different from USB-based network adapters which is permitted by themselves.so replacement is your own risk,I have no responsibility about replacing at all,sorry for understanding.

here you should check pics;
1.first you should open the rear cover and you can see SSD,DDR-667 SDRAM and miniPCIe wifi card.

2.loose and get rid of two screws and unlock antena cables(write and black cables,see the pics)
and in this case you might need the screwdriver whose top has something magnet not to lose your screws)

3.pull and take up (you might use something small bar to do it) miniPCIe card to change for new miniPCIe,paying attention to antena cables or they would go into its case and difficult to catch up to relock then(you need something mini tape to bind the cables)

4.put new miniPCIe wifi,tighten screws again and lock two cables.
5.boot up the system then you can use it with wpi driver(see the pics)

but sooner I had a time to talk Robs when the ralink will support. he says it will be supported very soon.so you don't have to be impatient to replace it:(

by the way for this dayoffs I went to Atami in Shizuoka where is famous to onsens to bathe it with my coleague riding my motorcycle.in the way going back my home,I went to Izu skyline road where has beautiful landscapes and Hakone turnpike road in Kanagawa where also has beautiful landscapes.I took some pics with my motorcycle and my Eee 901.it was great time and fine no cloudy there.

I could use emobile cellphone network in Hokone turnpike so I used D02HW to use internet on my Eee 901:)it was very good for me to take my Eee on OpenSolaris there as my mobile netbook.

P.S. you know we Japanese have a habit to go shrines to pray for New Year.it took some pics at Arai yakushi shrine near my apartment.here is some pics:))

Solaris Nevada b104 on Eee 901

Hi,

Some people asked me about Solaris Nevada on Eee PC but I don't have optional over 16GB SSDs for Nevada installation so I cant try to install Nevada on my Eees.lately I have a chance to install Nevada on Eee 901,that is,I have a chance to borrow Eee 901 from my business partner for checking Eee's specifications.so I tried to install Nevada b104 latest release on his Eee 901.

I haven't tried so much on his Eee running Nevada,but Eee 901 works good on Nevada;945GME works out of the box -you don't add any optional drivers for it like OpenSolaris 2008.11.but there are some problems;
*Ralink wifi doesn't work same as on OpenSolaris.
*you need to add usbser patch using modems.
*you cant use shutdown menu - so Eee 901 can't shutdown correctly its power LED is still on though it shut off.you have to type "psradm -f 1" before you type "poweroff" for shutting it.
(it is a same problem on OpenSolaris on Eee 901.shutdown timing on multi-cored CPU caused its problem so we have to make shut off its one side of CPU through the "psradm" command.)
*Ekiga works not so well - the video which is taken by my webcam has some noise lines:((

Sorry I could'nt blog because of a cold I had had a cold for a long while I had a sore throat and much cough:(I am now getting better,I wish I would get well soon.

I presented our project "OpenSolaris on the Eee PC" at TechDays in Tokyo.It was a great time having a fun with the audience.I wondered I had second times to present it there - the first one is at LT and the second one is at University day:-))

I also wondered there are various people who are interested in using OpenSolaris on Eee PC or something netbook.I had a chance to talk with David Stewart of Intel,who was a one of the speaker at the TechDay.he has used OpenSolaris on Eee PC.he just tring to install his borrowed Eee.I was glad to hear some of Intel guys are using OpenSolaris on their Eees.And I met a junior high student - perhaps he is the youngest participatiant at the TechDays.he was interested in Eee,and he had a plan to buy one.Reading his blog,he bought it and tring to use OpenSolaris on his Eee.

L1E/L2 driver finally works out!

Murayama-san,who is famous of developing wired drivers for OpenSolaris,has done his work for L1E/L2 wired driver for Eee Series:)follow the link and you can use "atge driver for Atheros/Attansic PCI-E ethernet controller L1, L2 and AR81 family" for you Eees.

I have been working with him for this month to work out for Eees.He is very interested in our project "OpenSolaris on EeePC" he proposed me he would try to make the driver for Eee Users and asked for testing.he is very busy for his job,but he would try to make a spare time for making the driver.it is a good "try and error" time for me.We had a fun time making and testing.

We EeeUsers must be very happy L1E/L2 finally has worked out for our Eees.Thanks Murayama-san!it is great works!

I tried to install OpenSolaris snv100 latest release on my Eee,finally keyboard works out!
And since snv99 audiohd works good:)

by the way,I find device manager also works on my Eee despite of older version not working.

Checking device mangers of Eee 701 and 901,usbvc works on them but ekiga doesn't recongnize.

Caution:you should remove and re-install i945GME driver that sayama-san makes on your Eee 901 before you use pkg image-update.

I haven't checked in detail but check youtube on Eee 900 at a glance it works better than on the former OpenSolaris builds.I will update the videos soon.

I talked some OpenSolaris users in Japan about it, I guess snv99 doesn't recognize Eee CPU - Cerelon 900MHz but actually 630MHz by the BIOS.I tried to downgrade it to use 900MHz but now my BIOS is 0910 which cant downgrade,that is,after 0703 it cant do it by its bios upgrading system - it is regrettable..0705 can use 900MHz,so if anyone would succeed in installing snv99 using 0705,please let me know:)

any ideas and informations about snv99 on Eee 701 are much appreciated for me:))

I found EEEbios which can downgrade BIOS 705 so I tried to use it for snv 99 installation,but Eee won't work same - I got same messages snv 99 didn't find module file.I also tried to use 8804,which can use 900MHz too,but Eee won't work it cant boot from LiveCD - cant configure Eee devices and stop booting from it.

I hope OpenSolaris update version - snv100 or 101 - would work well on my Eee 701:( I will wait using snv98:))

You know OpenSolaris is now updated so irregularly so It is not easy to update your Eee to catch up the new release because it has no optical drive that is used for installing the newest.

I had a vacation for this week,so I tried to update my Eee at the hotel staying as my vacation.I took some pics for it.

I used search listings like Google,yahoo...I find OpenSolaris can use "torrent" using "transmission" but it needs libcurl which can download from blastware.

First I downloaded SFEtransmission for using bittorrent.

OpenSolaris has no libcurl that transmisson need to use,I had to install "blastware" for installing libcurl - for using transmission.

Let me tell you libcurl installation from blastware;
(You should check the blastware site;http://www.blastwave.org/howto.html)
1.To install blastware;pkgadd -d http://blastwave.network.com/csw/pkg_get.pkg
2.To install libcurl;/opt/csw/bin/pkg-get -i curl
(the installer ask for installing related softwares for libcurl,you must install them for it )
3.set PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH for using libcurl
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/csw/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
PATH=/opt/csw/bin;$PATH
export PATH LD_LIBRARY_PATH

type "transmission" and add "torrent files" from "http://dlc.sun.com/torrents/info/" and I started downloading newest release iso file at the restauraunt having lunch.(nothing to say,you can "pause" downloading for restarting)

I had finished downloading at the morning in the hotel and I could see the osol-0811-99.iso in "Downloads" directory,so I tried to make bootable Live "usb" for OpenSolaris,To make the "Live-usb" I had to install SUNWmercurial for OpenSolaris.org site;http://jp.opensolaris.org/os/community/tools/scmdownloads/SUNWmercurial-0.9.5-i386.pkg.bz2

after installation I did as follows;
(you should check the website;http://blogs.sun.com/dminer/entry/opensolaris_developer_preview_on_usb)

1.I had to get the Distribution Constructor from repository;

hg clone ssh://anon@hg.opensolaris.org/hg/caiman/distro_constructor

2. I moved into the distro_constructor/tools directory and run usbgen

e.g. ./usbgen /root/Downloads/osol-0811-99.iso /root/Downloads/osol-0811-99_usb.iso /tmp

3 I plugged my USB flash drive(1GB) into the system, then run usbcopy

e.g. /usbcopy /root/Downloads/osol-0811-99_usb.iso

I was succeeded in installing OpenSolaris on my Eee 900 but not on my Eee 701.
perhaps it must high-quality and high-speeded SDHC or so on for making it (I downloaded to SDHC and making the file for making "Live-usb" in SDHC)

NOTICE:you should prepare another usb drive for installing additional drivers (ath and so on)

P.S. I travelled to Nikko there were so many crowded:-(I stayed at "Hatago-ya" in Sano Service-area,Tohoku jidosyado highway,it is reasonable price:-)

I told you Sayama-san told me another "workaround" for "shutdown problem" in Eee 901.I tried to use this "workaround" on my Eee 901 so let me tell about it.

He taught me Eee 901 should shut off its multi-cpu system just before it would shut off the whole system - Eee 901 doesn't need to shut off its multi-cpu system through its BIOS menu.so he said I should add "/usr/sbin/psradm -f 1" before "init 5" line in the file "/usr/lib/hal/sunos/hal-system-power-shutdown-sunos",so I will be able to shut off Eee 901 system through "shutdown" menu in "Gnome".

I tried new "workaround" on my Eee 901 today,it works great!awesome!

Workaround(Eee 901 has shutdown problem)

I reported you Eee 901 has "shutdown problem";it sometimes cant cut off the Power and Wifi LED when we shut off Eee 901.
Kobayashi-san pointed out the problem using OpenSolaris on multi-cored PC,you know,he made "usbser" patch for us.so I checked /var/adm/messages on my Eee I found the "WARNING";

Sayama-san tried to install OpenSolaris snv97 on his Eee 901.it works well except Wifi and Wired but it is good to hear huawei emobile modem works well:)

I shall trans and add explanation for you briefly;

(CAUTION;You should update the BIOS for Eee (now BIOS for Eee 901 is 1502),and I won't mention "-v" option for Eee's keyboard and installing audiohd driver (latest driver works well on my Eee 901:-))

1.Preparing for OpenSolaris snv97 Installation on your Eee

You should make xorg.conf for installation;
you know gdm won't work on your Eee from LiveCD at first.
so you have to use "CUI" to prepare for installation.

you should login as "jack" (passwd jack),and
set as follows;

pfexec env HOME=/ /usr/X11/bin/Xorg -configure

then you can see the file xorg.conf.new in "/" file,
so you should edit "Device" line to change "intel" to "vesa" for the installation in this file.and copy this file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf

2.OpenSolaris snv97 installation on your Eee

pfexec gdm -restart for the installation using "vesa" mode.If the installation have finished,you should re-edit "Device" line to change back "vesa" to "intel" for installation 945GME driver in "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" file.

3.Installing the 945GME driver

You should download 945GME driver he attached the patch for using 945GME Graphics.unpack the "945gme_sol.tar.bz2" file and copy the all the file to /kernel,that is,/kernel/drv,/kernel/drv/amd64,/kernel/misc,and /kernel/misc/amd64.

You should edit the /etc/driver_aliases for using 945GME;
add the line as follows;
i915 "pci8086,27ae"
agptarget "pci8086,27ac"
then reboot the system.

5.Using emobile drivers;

At first you should "update_drv -a -i usb12d1,1003 usbsacm"
and then you should check Taki-san*1's blog wrote about EMobile setting,that is,you should check out the file;/etc/ppp/peers/emobile,/etc/ppp/emobile-c shohat,and /etc/ppp/pap-secrets on his website for using Emobile.

7.Using usbser patch using multi-core(or hyper-threading) for prevent from your Eee freezing.

You should download the patch and unpack usbser.tar.bz2 and then copy all the file /kernel,that is,/kernel/misc and /kernel/misc/amd64 and reboot the system.

*Internal keyboard still doesn't work well so I had to add "-v" option on grub menu.

there have been many problems using OpenSolaris since it launched,so I hope to fix soon to do well on my Eee,the problems are as follows;

*intel 945GME won't work(CR 6732657)
*usbsacm wont work it doesnt down the ppp-link(CR 6588968)
*sometimes it cant shutdown - it cant turn off (power LED are still on
even though DISPLAY and SSD turn off),I haven't uploaded this problem to bugzilla.
*Attansic L1E won't work(now it hasnt been uploaded as a problem to bugzilla)

You know ASUS has announced new Eee 900-X Japanese Editon will be released at Sep 13th,but they suddenly has postponed the day....they say they split the capacity of SSD (16GB→8GB+8GB) and adopt high-speeded SSD on one side.their disision should be welcomed because high-speeded is good for many operating systems on Eee especally for we OpenSolaris users,who use zfs file system!
they say Eee 900-X is going to have launched at Nov 20th.I am looking forward to seeing this "New" Eee,because it has useful "old" systems -915 chipset,ath driver,realtek HD,Celeron CPU - so it can work so well on many many operating system - Solaris,Linux and so on!

Report:Update OpenSolaris 2008.11 preview snv96 on my Eee 701 and 901

I am sorry too late to report to you:)
I tried to install OpenSolaris 2008.11 preview build 96 on my Eee 701 and 901 on this Sunday,so I will let you know the report for the installation.

Its installation has almost same problem as former release - snv95.
*Both of internal keyboards dont work unless adding the "-v" option to the grub.
*"poweroff" didn't work well on Eee 901(Its "power" LED was on despite of its display turning off)

and I found lately Realplayer 11 won't work on my Eee 701,error message is as follows;

The program 'realplay.bin' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
(Details: serial 39 error_code 8 request_code 140 minor_code 13)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

hmm?bug? and sometimes core-file was created,checking core I could find "segmentation fault" in the core-file.so I now using former Realplayer 10 on my Eee 701.well...but...not only real but also frashplayer using for Youtube doesnt work well..sometimes it stopped streaming for a bit time..well they doesn't fit OpenSolaris lately version on Eee?I have to check in detail...:-(

I hope Eee 901 will be available on OpenSolaris:-)

Every time I use Eee 901 on Windows,I am much annoyed how slowly the web brower works. it is sometimes not responded because it is in progress....it makes me much stressed.....I always wonder why it works so slowly on Windows...

I reported you about OpenSolaris on Eee 901,it worked so well except some problems. Sun China now putting lots of efforts to fix the problems so that Eee 901 would work well on OpenSolaris.I always thank them and I hope Eee 901 will be available on Eee 901:) (Now they are trying to make Ralink 2860 driver which Eee 901 has,I wish Gnome would work well with auto-setting,you know I had to use xorgconfig and choose "VESA" so that Gnome would work well on my Eee.)

According to search listings (something Google),we know some person reported Eee 901 didn't work well on Ubuntu.....so we will have to choose XP for 901....awwww it is silly!

Report:Installing OpenSolaris 2008.11 preview snv95 on my Eee 701 and 901

Hi,

I tried to install OpenSolaris 2008.11 preview snv95 on my Eee 701 and 901 yesterday.So I let you know the report for installation;

Both of internal keyboards didn't work stable;so I had to add "-v" option to boot menu.Sometime keyboard worked but touchpad didn't work.

On Eee 901,I tried again to use "WLI-U2-KG54" that is external usb Wifi adaptor because you know it is in progress that internal Ralink 2860 wifi would work well driver on 901. I didn't have to add any ural drivers -only I edit "/etc/driver_aliases" and added 'ural "usb411,66"' on it then I could use this external usb wifi driver:)

On Eee 701,I couldn't use external SSD disk drive to install OpenSolaris snv95 - I tried twice:(( -I couldn't see "GUI grub menu" after the installation using external SSD disk..I only could see CLI grub menu...I have to investigate why it doesn't work.so I will try again this weekend.

And I had to pay attention to uninstall and install ath driver on my 701 because IPS has become to check the relative Softwares with ath driver - I couldn't uninstall ath driver using "pkg uninstall SUNWatheros".this is the message as follows;

bash-3.2# pkg uninstall SUNWatheros
Creating Plan |pkg: Cannot remove 'pkg:/SUNWatheros@0.5.11,5.11-0.95:20080807T162904Z' due to

So I had to use "-r" option to remove the former ath driver,that is,I had to use "pkg uninstall -r SUNWatheros" to uninstall this former driver.of course,then,I had to reboot before installing new ath driver.

I didn't try to use anything on my 701 and 901,I found gnome "poweroff" and "poweroff" command sometimes didn't work on my 901;Display turned off but blue LED for switch and wifi didn't turn off:(( so I had to keep pushing on the switch for a while to switch off my 901.I hope to fix the problem so soon(I bet it is bug!)

I cant forget "Nagasaki day" on August 9 in Japan.You know,it the day Atomic bombs falled down to Nagasaki...my grandmom - has passed away since about 10 years ago -told me just after the huge dirstuction...at that time she visited her relatives but she couldnt meet them because they were dead because of the distruction...and couldnt see you know they were vanished! the injureds told her they need water..water...water...she burst into tears and gave them riceballs she made for her relatives...

I would pray for the victims and wish such a overkill has never been done in the world...

Because its uncreditable hot these day in Japan,my Macbook has been broken...Its backlight for Display suddenly turned off,it has never been on...so I brought Applestore in Ginza they said it will be fixed this weekend.. I have to reinstall Windows on my 901 for my business - I have to postpone the investigation how OpenSolaris works on my Eee 901....oops....darn it!...Sorry for your inconvenience.If my Mac is back to me,I will continue the investigation....

and I've heard Applecare for iPhone3G at the store.I can contract the Applecare at Softbank shops I went there after leaving my Macbook to the Applestore.I wondered no papers about this care were given to me from Softbank shops.They said I now have the care and there are no papers about it..is it so??

I wrote OpenSolaris Installatiion on my Eee 901,but I didn't try the latest driver on my Eee 901 on the installation,so last week I tried to install the latest driver on my Eee 901.

Hi,

Gilles-san reported OpenSolaris 2008.5 on Eee 900 to eeepc-discuss.
He said 900 has intel audio - no so same as 701 - which has realtek audio,so he had to use oss audio driver though Tim-san suggested to use latest audio driver.

I haven't try lastest driver on 901,I have to check it so soon:)

This week I tried to update OpenSolaris 2008.11 preview snv94 on my Eee 701 and 901.
I used PHS300 - cellular modem router as I told you - for downloading the updates from pkg.opensolaris.org.both were succeed in installation:).

but there are some problems using OpenSolaris snv94,firefox 3.0 didn't work on my Eees when I use Japanese environment as follows;

Before Updating OpenSolaris snv94 on my Eee 901

Hi,

I tried to update OpenSolaris snv94 on my Eee 901,there were some problems for me updating.
First,I couldn't use my home networks connected to JCOM network because they limit the connection of their networks to prevent from abuse using even though only I would like to "download" for updating my OpenSolaris on Eee 901:(
Second,I reported that I couldn't use D02HW emobile usb modem on my Eee 901,Judy-san told me that perhaps It is bug 6588968 (see;http://bugs.opensolaris.org/view_bug.do?bug_id=6588968).I can download the updates using emobile network but I cant use the modem on Eee 901 yet...:((

So I occured an idea to use "cellular router",that is,the router can use the cellular network to access by wifi.I've heard from a vendor there are some users in Japan for using it as "cellular router".by the way,it is about $300 in Japan...ouch...it is expensive...:((

It was very easy for setting.I set usename "em" and passwd "em" on WAN menu in BASIC tab menu.and I opened ADVANCE tab menu to set modem scripts on MODEM SETTING menu as follows;

Report: OpenSolaris Installation on my Eee 901

Hiya:)
I now try to install OpenSolaris on my Eee 901.though it's in progress now,let you know as my first report:)

1.Internal keyboard did'nt work again while installation so I added -v option to the grub menu.

2.Gnome didn't work automatically so I had to set X configuration using xorgconfig.I chose "VESA" - but it's regrettable not to be able to use virtual screen mode - I had to use 800x600 resolution although you know Eee can use 1024x600 resolution on Windows:(

3.Wifi and Wired didn't work - Eee has Ralink 2860 wifi and Attansic wired - I hope they will be available on Eee 901 so soon:) By chance I had a substitute for it - BUFFALO WLI-U2-KG54 usb wifi adaptor which is based on Ralink 2500 chip and works well on OpenSolaris,so I tried to use that.you can download the ural driver http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/laptop/wireless/ural/ (you should edit "/etc/driver_aliases" and add 'ural "usb411,66"' on it.)

4.Oss works so-so on my Eee 901 - It sounded a bit indistinctly,..well,oss driver for Eee 901 should be improved:(its installation is same as the installation on Eee 701 -pkg uninstall SUNWaudiohd→reboot the system→pkgadd oss→reboot again the system).

5.HUAWEI modem didn't work on Eee 901 it dial up but it couldn't establish any network connections and more could'nt kill the ppp process though I used "pkill"

6.In addition,Secondlife didn't work on my Eee 901,the viewer flickered on my Eee 901:(

Lately you know there are so many atoms based notebooks released as netbook,I hope OpenSolaris will work well on many of them...strongly I hope that!

iPhone3G and Eee 901 have launched last week!

Yay!

You know very fantastic cellphone - iPhone3G has launched last week.there are so much crowds in cellphone shops all over the world -that is so exciting:) I got iPhone3G at launch day,but It was wrong - USIM card wasn't recognized on my iPhone:( I brought cellphone shop where I had bought there,but shop-clerk said they couldn't accept any requests for repairments...but another shop in Omotesando accepted my request - the shop had my wrong iPhone exchanged good one:)) now my iPhone works great:)

And last week new EeePC 901-X(Japanese Edition) has launched.ASUS Japan had announced so suddenly...so I could'nt get it at launch day.But last Tuesday I got 901 at Shinjuku,so I now try to install OpenSolaris on 901..hmm...it is difficult to work well on ..but sooner I will let you know about the installation in detail :))

if you'd like to install OpenSolaris to your Eee,you must prepare the stuff for installation;

1.External usb keyboard - inner keyboard doesn't work when installing.but lately you don't have to prepare,inner keyboard works fine editing the boot option in the grub menu,that is,you can see the edit menu and edit the boot options as follows;

2.SDHC Cards -　with high-speed read/write and high durability (of cource you can install internal SSD,but you have to pay attention when you upgrade OpenSolaris 2008.11 preview release,you will have to add rpool to receive update files from repository when you install OpenSolaris to SSD)

3.External CD-ROM drive - almost drives work fine on Eee

Before your installation you might better format your SDHC using format tool of Microsoft Windows,sometimes it isn't recognized by OpenSolaris installer mistaking the capacity of your SDHC memory,so the installer might stop the way of installation:(...

Latest nevada failed to work again and again on my Eee.you know,I installed latest nevada on my Eee using ever-green 16GB SDHC as 'Enduser distribution' mode.Installation was successful,but often freezed because of disk access failture - nothing to respond:( so I decided to use Solaris nevada old version (I think the stable version for Eee is "b87")..it's regrettable for me...

I now trying to install Solaris Nevada Latest Release on my Eee PC using evergreen 16GB SDHC card.but I can't install twice when I choose 'Entire Distribution' mode.Solaris installer stop the way of install..but I can install 'End User Distribution' mode,perhaps,now the installer doesn't seem to stop.well,it takes so long time to install,I started installing at 5:30PM,37% of installation is the rest:(,when is it all done?:()

Ah I forgot to tell,the first We must format SDHC using Windows so that the SD could recognize the amount of memory so correctly.:(

What is the best 'bootdisk' for OpenSolaris on Eee?

I now considering what the best 'bootdisk' is for using OpenSolaris on EeePC .because some SDHC works fine but others don't.yesterday A-data 16GB SDHC was broken - it's third times it is broken.Ever Green 16GB SDHC can't install OpenSolaris.Transcend 8GB SDHC is sometimes broken it owns data that it cant be booted up and I have to rollback or re-install.....

So I now try to use ExpressCard-based SSD 8GB made by Transcend.I found it at akihabara shop.it was so cheaper than USB memory!and more it has "ECC" that is very interesting.at First time It worked so slowly that some smf didn't work because of 'time out' of disk access although it had 30MB/s read and 20MB/s write accesses.but since second time,It worked still a bit slowly but it works fine:) and I played youtube on my Eee,it worked so great!perhaps "ECC" worked well on OpenSolaris that made slowly and correctly disk access. If it were able to within Eee,it would be so great for users,but,you know,Eee doesn't have any ExpressCard slots,so we must use joint adaptor for usb 2.0 like this:(

If you have any information for 'bootdisk' using on Eee,I'd much more glad you could tell me:)

I'm Masafumi,I now living in Tokyo.
lately my challenge - installing OpenSolaris on my EeePC make me so cheerful in my life:) is it useful for us using OpenSolaris on such a cheap costs PC like Eee?Almost yes!,it's for good for education and developers when their idea have occured so suddenly then they have to write by java,C on their so small cutey netbook like Eee.
I now trying to use OpenSolaris on my EeePC so veriously -changing SDHC Cards and using SSD pci-expressed card....and so on!so challengers like to use Eee please check out my blog.I'm going to write installation on my Eee PC(gathering from my mixi blog:( ) so soon.hehe,so sorry for your inconvenience.
